Julie ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension that creates AI agents inside WhatsApp Web. This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is handled, and what choices you have.
1. What Julie Does Not Do
We want to be upfront about this:
- Julie has no backend server. There is no julie.help server that receives or stores your data.
- Julie does not collect analytics, telemetry, or usage data.
- Julie does not require an account or login.
- Julie does not sell, share, or monetize your data in any way.
2. Data That Stays on Your Device
All of the following data is stored locally in your browser using the Chrome Extension Storage API and never leaves your device unless you explicitly configure an AI provider:
- Agent configurations — system prompts, auto-attach rules, tool settings, and presets you create.
- Agent memory — any memory files agents create during conversations (scoped per-agent or per-chat).
- Conversation history — message history between agents and WhatsApp contacts.
- Extension settings — your preferences, MCP server configurations, and UI state.
- API keys — credentials you enter for AI providers are stored locally in Chrome storage and are never sent anywhere except to the provider you configured.
3. Data Sent to Third-Party AI Providers
When an agent processes a conversation, message content is sent to the AI provider you choose and configure. Julie supports:
- OpenAI (api.openai.com)
- Anthropic (api.anthropic.com)
- Google Gemini (generativelanguage.googleapis.com)
- Custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints you configure
The data sent to these providers typically includes:
- The agent's system prompt
- Recent conversation messages relevant to the current interaction
- Tool definitions and tool call results
You control this entirely. No data is sent to any AI provider until you enter an API key and enable an agent. Each provider has its own privacy policy and data handling practices — we recommend reviewing them.
4. Data Sent to MCP Servers
If you connect external Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, tool calls and their inputs may be sent to those servers. MCP servers are entirely user-configured — Julie does not connect to any MCP server by default.
5. Permissions Explained
The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:
- storage — to save your agent configurations, memory, and settings locally.
- scripting — to inject the Julie UI into the WhatsApp Web page.
- tabs — to detect when you navigate to WhatsApp Web.
- userScripts — to execute WhatsApp Web JS code in a sandboxed context for interacting with WhatsApp's client API.
Host permissions (web.whatsapp.com, AI provider domains) are used solely to integrate with WhatsApp Web and to make API calls to the providers you configure.
6. WhatsApp Data
Julie reads message content from WhatsApp Web in order to let your agents respond to conversations. This data is:
- Processed locally in your browser
- Sent only to the AI provider you configure, for generating responses
- Never sent to us or any other third party
Julie does not access WhatsApp messages from chats that do not have an agent assigned.
7. Data Retention & Deletion
Since all data is stored locally in your browser:
- Uninstalling the Extension removes all stored data.
- You can delete individual agents, memory files, and conversation history at any time through the Extension UI.
- You can clear all Extension data via Chrome's extension settings.
8. Children's Privacy
Julie is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
9. Changes to This Policy
If we update this policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top. Significant changes will be noted in the Extension's release notes.
